The mud from the Eifel volcano is a mineral product obtained from the volcanic deposits of this area. This is firstly extracted from the opencast mines close to Bad Neuenahr and then it is finely ground at a temperature of 300ºC. The product
arising is an odourless grey product, smooth as velvet. Among the many healing techniques known from the antiquity, the treatments with natural mud were mentioned and documented in remote times such as the prehistory.
The Roman tradition of baths and mud continued in Italy throughout the Middle Ages until our times. This tradition of mud masks started in Germany much later, with the flowering of the culture of healings, in the early 20th Century. The cradle of natural mud is Bad Neuenahr, where masks with the Eifel's mud are made since 1908.
